What is CRYSTAL-CLEAR PRESENTATIONS™?
CRYSTAL-CLEAR PRESENTATIONS™ is a foundation course in presentation technique.
Presentation technique involves the various techniques we use to convey a message; how we use our voice, our body language, our expressions and our gaze. This includes the use of various technical tools, like PowerPoint, video, audio, pictures, flipcharts, whiteboards and props, and how we combine these in a way that helps our audience hear, understand and remember what we say.
What characterises a crystal-clear presentation?
- A presentation that uses the right techniques and tools to lift its message, so it becomes crystal clear to the audience.
- A presentation that makes you, the speaker, seen, heard and acknowledged.
- A presentation that touches and engages the audience.
This I what you’ll learn in the CRYSTAL-CLEAR PRESENTATIONS™ course:
How to be a secure, self-confident and credible presenter
What we humans fear more than anything is speaking in front of a crowd. Unfortunately, stress and nerves can get in our way when we need to give a presentation. We tense our muscles, which makes our voice flat and weak, gives us stiff and unnatural body language, and sends a signal of insecurity, which again weakens our credibility. In a worst-case scenario, we might find that our mind goes blank and we forget everything we’re meant to say. This course will help you understand why we get nervous and teach you techniques to master stress and nervousness. You will also learn how to make a good and credible first impression, and techniques to help you remember what you need to say.
The art of making people listen and creating engagement
People easily get bored during presentations, especially when someone uses PowerPoint slides full of text. Luckily, it doesn’t take much to turn this around. By becoming aware of your body language and how you can use your voice, your gaze and your expressions, you can catch the audience’s attention and create engagement during your presentation. You will learn how to train your voice to be powerful, authoritative and pleasant, so people will want to listen to you. You will also learn the two most important factors that have to be in place if you want to create a presentation that engages those listening.
How to use aids that actually aid
Why do we use PowerPoint? Because “everyone does”? Because it helps us remember what we want to say? The purpose of PowerPoint and other aids is to help the audience hear, understand and remember what you are saying. You will learn about the sensible use of PowerPoint, and when it may be more beneficial to use a flipchart or a whiteboard as a tool instead.
What will you get?
- Theory: The purpose of the course is to give you a thorough understanding of the techniques and aids you can use to become a good and engaging speaker. We will vary between theory and practical, efficient exercises. We won’t settle for telling you what to do; we will also tell you why it is effective and smart, and how you can do it. Then – we’ll practise.
- Training: During the course, you will give two presentations in front of the group, and get feedback on how the content is conveyed. You will receive guidance from an engaged course leader and useful tips that will help you utilise your strengths and control your weaknesses. You will also receive feedback from the other participants, and get experience with giving feedback yourself. Giving and receiving constructive feedback is a fundamental skill in continuously improving, and this is an important part of the course.
- Required reading: Before the course starts, you will receive a booklet that introduces you to the theory. During the course, you will receive the book 10 Steps to a CRYSTAL-CLEAR MESSAGE™, Part 2. In addition, you will receive written feedback from the course leader, outlining your three greatest strengths as a speaker and a point of improvement that you would benefit from practising more to become a better speaker.
- BONUS: All participants in the CRYSTAL-CLEAR PRESENTATIONS™ course will receive Anette Aarsland’s book, BREATHING – How to breathe to feel healthy, confident and calm. An outstanding book with many practical exercises. You can read an interview in Norwegian with Anette here!
The course spans two days and starts at 9am unless other times are specified.
This course has proven very useful to our work life. Practical and “straight to the point”, with a good combination of theory, examples, exercises and constructive feedback. The icing on the cake is when – at the end of the day – the course leader gives each participant written feedback on their presentations.
